Live Long and Prosper with a VoIP phone
Previously, there was a discussion about selecting between a softphone or a hardphone when it comes to Voice over Internet Protocol technology. Advantages and Disadvantages were mentioned about both devices when it comes to their personal or even small business use. One of the advantages of a softphone that was not tackled in that previous post was the ability of the owner to customize what kind handset or headset they would like to use. Since a softphone is computer based, selecting the hardware setup to utilize it is not as limited as a hardphone.
An example of this is the new product by the company DreamCheeky, a USB port VoIP/Skype phone with a twist. This device has the traditional earphone and microphone setup of other VoIP phones but this time brings it in a package that is surely appealing to Star Trek fans everywhere. Timed with the release of the new Star Trek Movie this week, this handphone is a perfect replica of the communicators used in the original Star Trek TV series.
The “Star Trek Communicator” VoIP phone comes with all the features of a regular USB connected VoIP device. It has a Volume switch, speakerphone functions, volume control and a 6 foot long USB cable. It is also compatible with computers running Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X Tiger or greater and voice chat applications such as MSN, Skype, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and etc.
Of course with the kind of design, and built in Star Trek sound bites such as “Transporter room ready to beam up” that the phone has it is obviously catered to hardcore Trekkies and not for small business owners looking for something to add to their office equipment.
