Software Development Lifecycle

Most small to medium size businesses may not have the budget hence the ability to execute a formal SDLC for their software needs therefore often results in a shrink-wrap bought software or for the more adventurous ones, they usually try to execute it on their own.  This often resulted in an adhoc manner that prevented scalability.

I have seen hundreds of these adhoc MS Access and Excel applications that became the foundation of their businesses.  Not only it becomes inefficient later, most of them are based on an old versions of these applications.  Most of them are hesitant to upgrade due to a.) will cost them more and b.) they’re not sure if their functions will be supported (or they found out that its not).

Creating and developing application does not have to break the bank in order for it to be functional and scalable.  The major things that I’ve taken out of the formal SDLC implementation that I have applied and provided to my small business clients are to determine the following:

  1. Target audience / users
  2. Input / Output of the application
  3. Features / Functionalities / Requirements

From the items above, I’m able to define the appropriate lifecycle for the business that definitely fits their budget and resources.  The outcome is quality application, well-manage implementation and very well-informed and educated clients.
